Opening of the jubilee year of the sanctuary

This jubilee year will begin on 30 and 31 August 2025, during the Grand Pilgrimage, when the shrine of Pellevoisin will commemorate the 150th anniversary of the apparitions to Estelle Faguette.

Presentation of the Jubilee

Coming to Pellevoisin on a Jubilee pilgrimage means:

– learning from Mary, who said, ‘I choose the little ones and the weak for my glory.’

– asking Mary, Mother of Mercy, to intercede for us.

– taking a step of humility by acknowledging our faults before the heart of Jesus, burning with love for us, which Mary reminds us of through the scapular.

– giving thanks for all the blessings we have received in our lives.

– Draw from Mary the strength to bear witness to the world of her glory by testifying as pilgrims of hope to the Lord’s merciful love for each one of us.

The 2025 annual pilgrimage (Saturday-Sunday, 30-31 August):

Opening of the 150th anniversary jubilee year: commemoration of Estelle’s letter of request and testimony of concern for others and trust in times of trial.

We will commemorate the first days of September 1875: Estelle Faguette, from her bed of suffering, had a letter of supplication placed at the foot of the statue of Our Lady of Lourdes in the Montbel park, owned by the La Rochefoucauld family, for whom she worked as a servant. As the sole support of her parents, who were ‘on the verge of begging for bread,’ she begged the Blessed Virgin to grant her healing. This was the beginning of ‘150 years of graces.’ Following her example, pilgrims learn that calm and courageous waiting in trials strengthens the believer’s hope and deepens their trust in God’s unfailing love.

The answer to Estelle’s prayer came nearly six months later, through five visits from the Virgin Mary between 14 and 19 February 1876: ‘Your little letter touched my mother’s heart.’

After this healing, recognised as supernatural by the Archbishop of Bourges in 1983, ten further encounters with the Virgin Mary prepared Estelle for her mission, which is well summarised by the title of the letter of recognition from Rome: ‘Our Lady of Mercy, lead us to the Heart of Christ’. Indeed, on 22 August 2024, the Church authorities, encouraging the faithful to freely express their devotion to Our Lady of Mercy, declared that ‘the words that Estelle attributes to the Virgin Mary have a special value that allows us to glimpse the action of the Holy Spirit at the heart of this spiritual experience’.

The jubilee journey, which can take several forms:
  • As a one-day pilgrim, follow in Estelle’s footsteps: there are four places to choose from for this jubilee journey:
  • Participate in the various jubilee events offered by the sanctuary throughout the year (see the programme below).
  • Take a 5-day retreat or other retreat to experience the sweetness of the Lord’s mercy revealed to us by the Virgin Mary.

To complete:
  • As part of this year of thanksgiving, the consecration of the altar and the dedication of the new liturgical space adjoining the restored apparition room will be celebrated.
  • This 150th anniversary of the shrine highlights two significant aspects of its message in relation to the challenges facing our society:
    • on the one hand, Estelle’s personality and life are particularly meaningful to our contemporaries because of her generous and discreet commitment to helping the vulnerable, beggars, the sick, her orphaned niece, elderly parents, etc.
    • on the other hand, the Virgin Mary, through her guidance of Estelle, provides guidelines for inner life that are accessible to all.
  • We recall that last October, Pope Francis luminously expressed in his encyclical Dilexit Nos that the dimension of the ‘heart’ is greatly overlooked in our society throughout the world.
